‘Uncertainty and the prospect of failure can be very scary noises in the shadows. Most people will choose unhappiness over uncertainty.’ Tim Ferriss in ‘Tools of Titans’
A running theme of this blog is dealing with uncertainty it seems, maybe because many of the posts have to do with trying to sort out life. Although there is no avoiding uncertainty, I depend on standing on the shoulders of giants as a way to get a better lay of the land ahead of myself and an idea of how a successful, smarter person might do things. Applying the advice from others is no guarantee it’ll work, but I think it increases the probability that it might. In a world of uncertainty you’ve got get guidance from someone or something, and that someone or something might as well have proved to be successful, which is why as source of information whether from Tim Ferriss himself, or the people he interviews is so valuable.
In yesterdays post I mentioned the mental model of ‘figuring out the wrong thing to do’. It seems that picking unhappiness is ‘the wrong thing to do’. It’s a guaranteed outcome, while uncertainty gives a fighting chance. It might seem ridiculous that some people actually choose to be unhappy, but in my observations and experience, it’s absolutely true.
Somehow, someway, I’ve been lured onto and often follow the path of Uncertainty. In my life Uncertainty is a proper noun, deserving of a capital ‘U’. Like Love is an essence to embrace, so has been ‘Uncertainty’. ‘The Road’ was a long time lover of mine while exploring the realm of Uncertainty. Whether through absorbing Taoist philosophy and trying to not try to follow The Way, or inspired by the many books I read telling tales of adventure, Uncertainty became the direction I’ve followed. Avoiding more certain paths has paid off handsomely, with the riches of exotic experience and relationships with a diversity of people. I think good luck has peppered my path because luck implies that an unexpected something happens, and the unexpected is always happening in the world of Uncertainty. Taking the path of Uncertainty, one increases the surface area of good luck to on them.
"luck implies that an unexpected something happens, and the unexpected is always happening in the world of Uncertainty. Taking the path of Uncertainty, one increases the surface area of good luck" i really like that statement and i think it's true! has definitely happened do me :)
